Madagascar Cichlids

We are going to begin presenting information about Madagascar cichlids on these pages. Not many of these wonderful cichlids have been described in any book or publication. We will try to get you the pictures and information that we have so you can see for yourself how wonderful they really are. Maybe then, you will want to begin keeping them and helping with their survival.

The Survival of Madagascar Cichlids

Species survival is a top goal of ours and we are willing to dedicate some of our tank space to the preservation of endangered species. With that in mind, we must say that Madagascar Cichlids are somewhat of a challenge to keep. They do grow BIG for the most part. Some of the species can be kept in smaller tanks of a bout 55 gallons in size, but the majority will do better in a larger 100+ gallon environment.

How can you help with the Species Survival Program? This is really a good question. We are going to place information about conservation and preservation on our website so we can show all those interested in species preservation the information that we have. DO we have all of the information? No, this seems to be a hard nut to crack. There is reluctance amongst the scientific community and the zoos of America to just allow hobbyists into this process of preservation.

Now on to the cichlids of Madagascar. They are a bit difficult to find, aren't they? We have gotten around some of that, but the truth is, they are endangered in the hobby too. This is just another great reason to get ahold of a few specimens and try your hand at breeding them for your local area or club. We have placed some fish on our stock list to allow hobbyists to get ahold of these great specimens. We will ask that those who purchase them help us with the survival program. Information and tracking of endangered species is something we can do.

The following list shows the currently held view for the status of fish from Madagascar. This listing depicts the priority of conservation for each listed species. Category 1 being the highest priority and 3 being the lowest.

The following table is fairly self-explanatory. Under the "notes" column we have listed the following, avail= we have some limited number of fish for distribution, breed= we are currently attempting to breed this species, ?????= we do not have this fish or a current way to get them into our breeding program
