Visual ID of this fish
  • Proximal Black Band on Caudal Fin
  • Vertically elongate stripes on lateral body
  • NO prominent vertical humeral blotch
  • Eye is silvery-blue with a dusky vertical band
  • Operculum is silvery-blue

General Scientific Data:

A black water fish found mainly in the Rio Negro but also in these other locations; Brazil; Rio Araria, Rio Negro - Marauia, Rio Daras - Aracu Waterfall, Rio Japura - Lago Amana,: in Venezuela; Rio Pacimoni, Rio Casiquiare, Rio Yatua

Further research and collection data needs to be conducted in the field with laboratory examinations as well as aquaria(ecology) documentation of habits and activity. This piranha is well described and the paratype coming from the Rio Negro is available to examine.

Serrasalmus Gouldingi from Brazil and Venezuela. Another interesting fish that is not making it into the export trade for aqauria, but may soon make its appearance.
